W06 Learning Activities: Web Design and Development Careers
Overview
In this activity, you will explore current job postings in the fields of web design, development, and digital strategy, with an emphasis on early-career opportunities (internship, entry-level, or junior-level positions). Use targeted search terms and filters to find real job descriptions in your region or remote-friendly roles.
Your goal is to understand how companies today are hiring, what skills they value most, and how ongoing learning in emerging technologies, frameworks, and tools can directly improve your career readiness and competitiveness.
Careers in Web Design and Development
There are many job opportunities in the field of web design and development, including:
- Developing the user-facing, frontend websites. (Web Developer, Frontend Engineer)
- Developing the backend server code. (Backend Web Developer, Full Stack Engineer)
- Administering the databases that store the information. (Data Engineer, Database Administrator)
- Configuring and maintaining the servers and cloud infrastructure. (Network Engineer)
- Researching the needs of the users. (Product Manager)
- Designing the user interface and experience. (UI/UX Engineer, Web Designer)
- Managing all the people involved in this work. (Project Manager)
Even if you don't work on a website specifically, nearly all software development today involves web development at some level.
Necessary Skills
For any of the careers in in Web Design and Development you will need a strong understanding of:
- HTML, CSS, and Javascript—the technologies the web is built on.
- Version control, such as Git.
- Project collaboration and issue tracking, such as GitHub.
- Other tools and packages, such as Node, React, and others.
- Testing and debugging.
- Problem solving.
- Communication and teamwork.
- Continuous Learning.
The last item, Continuous Learning, is perhaps the most important. Web technologies move so quickly, so it is critical for you to learn to love learning new things.
The key to learning is doing. Do not be afraid to take on projects, paid or unpaid, to boost your experience and overall portfolio of knowledge starting today.

- Navigate to LinkedIn job search, Indeed job search, or an equivalent job search site.
- Find a full-time job description in your area or that allows remote workers that has one
of the following titles or portion of the title in it. Filter
your search to only return jobs for internship, entry-level, or junior
level positions if possible.

- In Microsoft Teams, post a summary of your job findings to the Week 06 Forum channel by
providing
